IK (Railway Institut), former part of the PKP - Polish State Railways, since 1951 has been the leading railway research centre in Poland, covering all subjects on a railway technology. Since 2000, IK has been a R&D unit subordinated to the Ministry of Infrastructure, but basically commercial, subsidised below 10% of the turnover. IK has been authorised to issue qualification certificates for systems and products to be used within Polish State Railways. IK is the recognised Notified Body for railway interoperability directives, Id no. 1467.
The Materials and Structures Laboratory has been carrying out fire investigations since 1980 and evaluates Polish Standards (PN) concerning fire test methods (including smoke and toxic gases) and requirements for materials used in Polish railway, underground and tramway.
